A nucleosome is the basic structural unit of chromatin, the complex of DNA and proteins that makes up chromosomes within the nucleus of eukaryotic cells. It consists of a segment of DNA wound around a core of histone proteins. The core of the nucleosome is composed of eight histone proteins: two copies each of histones H2A, H2B, H3, and H4. The DNA is wrapped around this histone core in about 1.65 turns in a left-handed superhelix, forming a structure resembling beads on a string.
