Hutchinson`s History of the Nations 1915 - Peter the Great , Peter I or Pyotr Alekseevich ; 9 June 1672 – 8 February 1725 ruled the Tsardom of Russia and later the Russian Empire from 7 May 1682 until his death in 1725, jointly ruling before 1696 with his elder half-brother, Ivan V. Peter I, better known as Peter the Great, is generally credited with bringing Russia into the modern age. During his time as czar, from 1682 until his death in 1725, he implemented a variety of reforms that included revamping the Russian calendar and alphabet and reducing the Orthodox Church`s autonomy.
