Originally supposed to be called the Donahue Memorial Fountain, the Mechanics Monument was a gift to the city form James Donahue to his late father, Peter, for building the first foundry on the Pacific Coast, Union Iron Works, and it did have a fountain. Since James had no sons, the family name would die with him, it was important to remember the name, but his widow sued to block the request, which was already all paid for. The fountain did not survive the 1906 earthquake.
